STYLE FILE | Jess Blanch

ph / Various tumblrs, Shopbop

I have always had a strong apathy against ruffles, peplums, skirts and dresses. That feminine, giggling feeling they reminded me of was not an option. I spent days strolling through several men’s departments, always going for the XXL and the dropped crotch. A few years and several sizes later, I still feel connected to the suited women, the lady with an oversized pair of black glasses, the one who leaves her gender simply in the middle. Jess Blanch is one of them. She joined the fashion-army as editor in chief of the Australian RUSSH Magazine and doesn’t abjure her uniform. Remember that jawdropping Isabel Marant waistcoat? Spotted once and for all over the shoulders of Blanch. Trendspotter I tell you.

How would you describe your personal style?

"Classic, I suppose. I think a white silk blouse can be everything, but every so often I wear something ridiculous. I don’t really have the patience for accessorizing. And I only have one rule: not to wear black on Sundays, but don’t ask me why."

How did this dream started?
"My story is that same cliché you read so often. I grew up in a small country town and was the youngest in my family. It was a fairly isolated upbringing in terms of pop culture. I spent a lot of time riding my horse. I didn’t watch a lot of TV as we only had two channels, so I immersed myself in books and my parents’ records. I’d listened to a whole lot of Sinatra by the time I got to Nirvana. My mum loves fashion and totally indulged me with magazines and I just fell for that fantasy world within the pages. I was back at my parents’ home over the weekend, and I still have some Harper’s Bazaars from the mid-nineties in the drawers by my bed. The one where Lindbergh shot Kate Moss wearing the denim overalls. I’ve been looking at them for years without really noticing. It was like stumbling on gold."

What inspires you?
"F. Scott Fitzgerald said, “The world exists in your eyes only. You can make it as big or as small as you want.” I like this – it reminds me that it’s up to me. Literature, art, music. My Dad has always said, “When the going gets tough, the tough get going.” The fact that Billy Ocean made it his song is just a bonus. Most of all I think it’s a great conversation. It’s amazing how good you feel afterwards. That’s when I find my mind is most open and when I have my best ideas. I can be a little vague, always living inside my own head, not always listening while others are speaking to me; so maybe it’s even more special when I’m actually there in the moment with someone."

LOOK-ALIKE | ASOS vs. Balmain

ph / ASOS Collection, Balmain F/W 2012

No offense - I do appreciate hours and hours of craftsmanship, leather from almost extinct cows -imported from Nepal- and ateliers full of authentic Parisian seamstress. The point is: there is no money for any piece of clothing that reaches over two-hundred euros. While splurging digital money on the best pieces from the ASOS Collection (it's like Monopoly), I came across this wild sweater. No, it hasn't those details or little gems on it, but it has the same vibe as Balmain sets for this fall/winter, and it is on sale! Royal, without money.

FILM | Bring cult to the cinema

Splitscreens. During my ex-study journalism, it is one of the tricks that helped me through. Simple action, major effect. My shorts about farmers in the middle-of-nowhere of Holland did not come any near this video, called Volcano. I was amazed by the cooperation between close-ups and great wideangles. It has contrast, it has bravery, it has energy; it is completely aesthetically approved by the department of creativity.

Splitscreens.

Finally, a film where the clothing take central point. Branding films are often used as moodsetters, presenting the ultimate contentions of a brand. A dark, fairytale-ish film with loads of grunge and goth? Rick Owen. Easy breezy laughter, filled with happiness, festivals and long wavy hair? Free People. This one is from Christian l'Enfant Roi. A fine piece of art with beautiful menswear as base.

Hartstikke verantwoord!

Well, excuse me for this ode to splitscreens, but this one it completely artistic approved. Lisa Galesloot, responsible for a number of photographs on the AfterDRK blog, is a true genius. The visual installation Wholeheartedness is a tryptich with three themes: escapism, connection and authenticy. Meet Lisa's abstract vision on reality.

EDITORIAL | She rides the asphalt

ph / Jan Welters for Antidote Magazine

I just returned from a crazy weekend at 'A Campingflight to Lowlands Paradise', the wildest festival of all time. Since I am typing with dramatically half-open eyes, listening to the beep that drills through my fluffy brains, this won't be a piece of brilliant literature. Sorry.

Who doesn't get inspired by Céline nowadays? Since the amazing graphical skate decks Jayne from STOP IT RIGHT NOW created in late 2011 (great DIY), skateboarding is sizzling hot. Antidote Magazine went for a classic Icons Issue with Anna Piaggi and Andy Warhol, including this fairytale-ish editorial featuring Aymeline Valade and a skateboard. Big plus: she rides it trustworthy. These images bring back my early youth, longing to ride the asphalt just as the Z-boys did...

MUSIC | My Lowlands 2012 Playlist

In just a day I will be having a fantastic party with great music, disgusting wine and throw-away-camera's on Lowlands Festival! This is my festival guide through the busy schedule of rock, indie, dubstep and folk. Unfortunately, it is in Dutch because of the small amount of foreigners on the festival fields. Please let me know if you would like to see something translated.

Charles Bradley and his Extraordinaires, zaterdag 20.10 Lima

Shazalakazoo, zaterdag 17.15 X-ray
Het nummer ‘Baklava lover’ is ontzettend aanstekelijk, met teksten als ‘Baklava lover, she brings me spice and undresses my superpower’.

Jamie N Commons, vrijdag 19.30 Charlie

- Wilco, zondag 20.30 India
- Spinvis, zaterdag 13.40 Grolsch
- Rudimental, zondag 18.45 X-ray
- Orgel Vreten, zondag 15.10 Lima
- Django Django, vrijdag 17.45 Bravo
- Boy & Bear, zondag 13.40 India
- Chromatics, zaterdag 18.45 X-ray

ART | Face Reality

ph / Thomas Quinn via This is Colossal

Sometimes, you need to step up and face reality as it is. This impressive piece of art by Thomas Quinn is pure illusion. You first face the fact that it looks like Photoshop has been involved, later you will be stunned by the amount of 3D imagination that the artist has. Beautifully placed in a corner with high roof, raw floors and loads of light. Please come and paint my home with one of your strong messages?

LOOK OF THE DAY | Mija is smiling

ph / 1TO9 SMILING

Stunning, jaw-dropping, brilliant. Please welcome the beautiful Mija from 1TO9 SMILING, a newbie in the Creators of Desire-club. Her look is effortless, without getting tacky or shabby where the Olsen-twins have patent on. I have been crazy for simple tees lately, and Mija's fits perfectly. A complete look with just the elementary basics, I like. I might have added a red lip, but soit.

SELECTION | 4 DIY's worth the work

The veiled beanie | Jill Sander
You know it's a hit when Anna Della Russo, Bryan Boy and a handful of popular models run through Paris wearing your design. The veiled beanie by Jill Sander is from spring this year, but I prefer wearing it as a classy winter's hat. Adds some street to your dress, and some class to your jeans. Honestly... WTF did the greatest job translating the catwalk to a DIY.

The paper bag | Jill Sander
No way... Again? Jill Sander made another direct hit, the paper bag. Err, the design is actually a couple of centuries old, but he renewed it in his Fall 2012 collection. Just stamp your initials on one of these grocery bags or try to make one in the softes leather, as shown. Monoxious created a perfect DIY with waterproof cardboard (is that even possible?).

The flower crown | Unknown
The delightful vibe of hippyness, happiness and a touch of festival makes the floral crown such a success. And of course, the easiness to make one yourself helps as well. These crowns are well known in Scandinavia, where they are used during big festivities and weddings. Just try wearing a garden on top of your head, you won't regret it! Honestly... WTF nailed it again and made a simple DIY for the midsummer flower crown.
Transparent clutch | Samira Boon and others
Oh, I bet you saw this one everywhere. From the master of simplicity Pedro to the discoverer of Samira Boon, Ivania Carpio. Monoxious found out that these clear clutches aren't that hard to make, just find yourself a piece of seethrough vinyl, cut a cross and fold the flaps. Sounds easy? I am still busy with the first step, finding that 1mm vinyl... Anyway, the results are stunning, so worth a try.

AW12 | 5 Trends for this Fall

ph / We The People, Citizen Couture, Stockholm Streetstyle - edited by me

Some trends are meant to be, some are just hilarious. This is what I saw across a certain amount of streetstyle blogs - and liked. The mirrored sunnies (1) form an admiring contrast with the all-black suit, while the camouflage-print (2) mixes great with reptiles and chunky gold. I already own a pair of cat eyed sunglasses (3), fan since Alexander Wangs tip-toes some years ago. I even remember those as my first knock-offs! Classic combination: black and white (4). Right now seen a lot as dark on top, white beneath. You could make a sandwich and top it off with a pair of boots or a simple sandal. Sporty is sexy, especially with the Olympic Games still going strong. Keep it in mind for this fall, when (leather) baseball caps (5) are top of the bill. The dip-dye jeans (5) is actually from a few seasons ago (Dries van Noten), but mixes great with navy blue, a big favourite for autumn/winter 2012.

BUDGET TIP | Mono & Me Cross bracelets

Ph / AfterDRK

I am sorry, this tip is only available in certain Dutch stores.
